Silent "P"
Mood:  chillin'
Topic: People

Ok,

So the other day, a co-worker of mine walks behind the front desk. Another co-worker is being silly and asks him what it would be like to have a silent "p" in front of his name ( so his name would be Pmatt, and the "p" would be silent). So Matt says "then my name would be 'Phh-Matt'" ...... and he pronounced the "p"

I had to remind him that the "p" was silent, so his name would still be pronounced "Matt".

I think he caught on right as I began to say something...still, it was funny that he reacted so fast with "Phh-Matt."

My (dating) Space
Mood:  chatty
Topic: People

What is My Space? Is it a place where people can stay connected without using AIM, and e-mail, and a blog on some server somewhere else? Or is it one of the best ways for teens to show off pics of the crazy things (and poses) they do? Or is it one of the most disguised personals and dating web sites?

Well, it seems that My Space was originally designed to keep up to date info out on the web where only people interested in that info would be given permission to access even more info. Does that make sense? Ok, try this: it is a web site where your band can put all your info. Info such as gig date and time, band info, band member info, band pics and more. It also works the same way for any one member of your band, or any other person on the planet.

The funny thing is that people think you have some place where only people you designate as friends can get to. But then they place pictures and profile info on the public profile. Even when someone wants to be able to see your "private" profile, it is easy enough to get access. You just need to know their e-mail I believe.

And then you have all the other stuff that goes on. Pictures end up on My Space that are ... questionable, especially for teens. Girls have pictures of themselves in suggestive poses. Guys follow a similar pose theme. But the ones who show the oddest, most R-rated poses are couples. Even teen couples. Laying on each other or holding each other in ways they wouldn't in public. Then you have the funny guys who like to do things like moon the camera. And these are teens.

Not to mention the idea of a teacher "communicating" with a 13 year old kid who she seduced before and was sent to jail for. [link to] She was caught leaving blogs referring to that kids sports jersey number saying things like she loved him. A teacher telling a 13 year old boy that she loves him! Sick.

So what needs to be done about My Space and can anything be done? Freedom of speech means the freedom to say whatever you want, so there isn't a lot of legal action we can take against people who say what they want. And if you want the My Space people to scan every single blog and screen every single picture, then you better be ready to volunteer because ain't no way they could such and .

So I guess it's up to the parents to know what kids are doing, and up to the court system to not let sick teachers out of jail cause they were "on good behavior."

And for all you people that got a cool date from My Space, then congrats. Hope it works out.

How to test for intelligence
Mood:  quizzical
Topic: People

What is a better way to test for intelligence, such as IQ testing?

**Testing how well people know or how much people know about things they have never been told about...

**Testing how well people pick up on and are able to comprehend new things...

Well, which way is a better way to test for IQ or intelligence? What kind of questions should be on an IQ test? Is testing people on theories and ideas that they have never had the chance to learn about fair?

Trying Something New
Mood:  a-ok
Topic: People

I have decided to try something new and you'll never guess what it is.

In the (recent) past I have always wanted to volunteer to do things for people who need volunteers. The problem is I don't have any money. In order to be able to devote time to volunteering, I need to have money to live off of while I am not working. So I figured that I would work and build up some money so I would end up having time to volunteer later on. Eventually working and volunteering at the same time but having a good job, from which I could take off time if need be. Sound good?

Well, it didn't work. I work here and there and that is all I can find. I have no money but plenty of time. So I am going to try the opposite of what I planned on doing. I am going to volunteer despite the fact that I have no money. I decided to volunteer time to a pool I work at developing Safety procedures. I will volunteer time to the Red Cross teaching CPR and First Aid classes. I will be volunteering my time very soon with Big Brother/Big Sisters (as a Big Brother). And I have also decided to volunteer time working with Boy Scout groups in the area, doing work with First Aid and Aquatics. I have a job guarding at the college pool in the mornings and will teaching Lifeguard Training classes on Sundays...so I have some money income.

My plan is now to do something like what I heard alot about from those religious tv shows. People who gave and gave even though they did not have anything to give. They ended up getting in return and while my goal is not to end up getting because I gave a bunch, maybe everything will turn out OK.

If it doesn't work you'll know, because the Big Blog will go under and you will never hear from he again. Sorry reader. (that's not a typo)

Happy Hunting!

True Talent or Stupid Kid
Mood:  irritated
Topic: People
Ok, there is something that bothers me about teachers. Basically, they do not look for students who show original talent. Instead they look for students who can mimic or "appreciate" what scholars call "true art." Example: The following poem I wrote in the 6th grade.

Ode to this Poem
Write a poem
about what
so many things
to write about
I don't know where to start

So many Places
So many subjects
Should i make it rhyme
or not
frustrated I am
to much to think about
that's it! I quit! I'm done!

Ok, granted It's not something you hear from Shakespeare, but come on. Look at the poem. Read the poem. Try to use your brain and figure out how the words are suppose to flow. I agree the arrangement lacks, and it does kinda throw you off a little (even considering that I know how to recite the poem and it still catches me). But what does that say about the poem? There is more than one way to recite it, and there fore different people could get a different experience from reading it.

Let's forget the arrangement for a second and focus on the wording, the poem itself. It may not be classic poetry, and it certainly is no Poe, but look at what it does have.. for a 6th grader. First of all, the title. "Ode to this Poem." How ingenious for a kid to decide to write a poem about the poem he is writing, or trying to write. Then the poem is about what to write the poem about, not just about the poem. Then there's the line "frustrated I am." Everybody has seen Star Wars, and every body knows that Yoda liked to talk in reverse. My class knew I was the biggest Star Wars fan ever and none of them caught this... Plus this was another smart move by me to fill a line I had no other filling for. Most of this poem, like a lot of my poems I had to write for that stupid teacher, used this broken form, in which I created phrases or said things in an odd way. Considering I did this a lot, wouldn't that be my style, just like every other poet has their own style? Not to mention the multitude of other poets that said things in odd ways... and no one is their poetry.

Anywho, I'm not tryin to toot my own horn, but I think it's a little unfair that the better grades went to the kids (remember: 6th graders) who basically mimicked what they saw in the text books, as where I, who got a rather lame grade, made my poem totally from scratch and actually came upon this unique idea (Ode to this Poem...idea) after thinking about a great many other things that I could write about. My writing process led me to write this poem, about me deciding what to write this poem on. That's creativity.

Well, you can all think what you want, and I don't think this poem is worth a penny, however if you would like to buy it, I'm selling it for $4000.

Leave comments if you can.... please...

Children Making medical descisions
Mood:  irritated
Topic: People
I had been watching something on PBS about medicating children, specifically those with ADD, or as it is now called, ADHD. I thought it was rediculous that one set of parents were letting thier daughter basically decide what to do about it, in terms of:

"hey," says the doctor, "did you know there is a new medication called aderal?" "Oh there is," exclaimed the girl who supposedly has ADHD? "Maybe I can take aderal in the morning and then riddlin before gymnastics." "That's a good idea," the doctor promoted (who gains some cha-ching out of all this crap, by the way).

Then a teacher said they need to give her all the tools they have (calling riddlin a tool) and that she and other teachers liked this girl better now that she is on riddlin again.

You see, instead of just dealing with the fact that this girl has attention problems, by finding ways to keep the girl busy with task after task or other things to promote the girl wanting to control her attention, this teacher was more pleased with drugging the girl so that she would never learn to deal with her "ADHD" and she would then have to take medication all her life in order to focus on anything!

One parent said it best. She said that she loved her little boy for who he was and she loved that he was so full of energy. She did mention that he was a handful, but also that is no excuse for covering the problem with some drug, just because other people (mostly teachers) say they should.

You see, these drugs (such as riddlin and aderal) do not fix ADHD, or ADD, or AADD, or any other "problem." All they do is relax the individual who is taking them so thier hyperactivity is suppressed and they can then focus a little better. They do not get rid of, or cure ADHD. They simply allow the parent (or teacher) to not have to worry about thier child so much because the riddlin has calmed the child down. Heck, I have a hard time focusing about a lot of things, especially things like school (which I, along with every other child, teen, and college kid hate). So should I take some riddlin? No! If I allowed myself to think that there was an easy way out by downing a pill every morning then I would start to use my "disease" as an excuse for being lazy! I would say that I cannot pay attention and it is not my fault. When I told people that I had an attention deficit dissorder and was on riddlin, they would excuse my behavior and do nothing to try and help me. When I don't take my medication, people would then encourage me to get back on it, instead of just accepting the fact that the me not on drugs is the real me and they will have to deal with it.

ADHD is stupid. Some doctor may be able to link crap to other crap and say it's scientifically right. But people like teachers should not be looking for the easy way out, especially when it comes to prepareing children to function as mature, social, self-reliant adults. They should be doing everything in thier power to teach these kids that they may have some malfunction, but they need to learn to focus at certain times, and play around at other times (except in a more extreme degree than others).

I guess this is another example of people wanting a quick solution so they don't have to deal with it anymore. The ME/Now generation is headed for preoblems in the future. Are you ready to deal with them?

[by the way, i'm not really sure if I'm spelling the drug names correctly, just to let you know]

[I'm also sure I have misspelled 'thier' a couple times and probably in this sentence as well]
